An Uncertain Gaze Quietly Gives Rise to an Image

Once, in a windowless ICU, I nearly lost my sense of existence and time.

Having spent many years contemplating the thresholds between life and death in settings involving brain death and emergency medicine, I have always been concerned with a fundamental question: What does it mean for a human being to connect with the world?

After passing through the darkness of loss, this exhibition is an attempt to quietly reconsider what it means to "stand here, right now." It presents fragments of monochrome imagery that originate in my own gaze, yet are captured by the camera―an apparatus that records even what lies beyond the reach of that gaze.

A small puddle at one's feet reflects the sky and the trees. Shifting with the light and wind, its surface inverts the familiar world, allowing another landscape to emerge. As we contemplate these uncertain images, we are prompted to reconsider both the world we usually take for granted and the very nature of our own perception. In the silence, the world and the self reconnect. These are the fleeting moments I have sought to hold on to through photography.

In order to engage deeply with the world and recover the physical sensations I once nearly lost, I have hand-bound each photobook, one copy at a time. The way each book opens completely flat, its tangible weight in one's hands, and the tactile presence of prints displayed on the gallery walls―all these physical experiences of viewing photographs, turning pages, and standing before the works―offer ways of affirming our existence in this world amid the uncertainty of time.

As each of us lives within our own memories and stories, I hope this exhibition offers you a moment to let the currents of everyday awareness settle, and to quietly contemplate what it means to "stand here, right now."

Alongside the photographic prints, a hand-bound edition of the photobook HORIZON will also be on display.
